SUNL 150cc atv problems

Hi there-
This is my first post and I heard this was the place to come if I needed some help. I bought a SUNL SLA-150LK ATV from atvdiscounter.com it arrived yesterday. I put it together and flled it up with oil and gas, the electric start did not work cause the battery was no charged. I used the kick start and got it running, here is where the prb started. The manual says the egine need break in time, but what does the intell? I can drive it 1/4 or half throttle and it will drive all day but the second I give it more then half throttle it sputters and stalls. Is that normal? or is there soemthing else wrong with it? I'm pretty new to the whole atv thing, this is my first bike I got to just learn. I also could not find a choke on the bike for the life of me, is there one?
Also, I charged the battery over night and the electric start still wont turn over, any ideas?

Hey oakland welcome to the forums. First for the choke, you will not find a choke lever on it because it uses an automatic choke. As for not running right past half throttle, it sounds like either your mixture screw is not set right or you need to lower the E-clip on the needle jet of the carb to richen it up a little. Either way, follow ALL of the directions on the link below and let us know if that clears it up.

you made two mistakes, the first one buying a sunl, guess you didn't do your research before ordering it, the second was buying from atv discounters, you should have research both before ordering. you desire exactly what you got, a pos quad and no support from atv discounters.

Looks like our new member just got alot of experience.
Oakland, with some attention and a little effort you should be able to get that SUNL running pretty good. As for reliablilty and support, Bill's right. Neither is really there from SUNL or the dealer from what I've seen here.
PS - Oakland, that battery is most proably garbage. Most of the chinese one's are. Replace it with a 4lb battery from WalMart or some such. You'll be much happier.

You said Battery was not fully charged.
Sometimes these machines will not perform at top end when the battery is low or dead.
Get a 20 dollar trinkle charger walmart or Kmart special low amp and take the battery out of its mount and sit it on a board or rubber mat away from any flammable stuff just for safety.
Place the battery on charge over night.
Start trouble shooting after the battery is fully charged...

The fellow does not need to be put down for buying from a discount house he needs a little assistance!

You said Battery was not fully charged. Check the fluid in the battery, usually when shipped they are dry and electrolyte needs to be added to activate the battery.

Charging system used in motorcycles and other small engine designs use a full wave rectifier with a regulator zener circuit built in.
The full wave without filtering leaves a sawtooth wave and the battery is similar to a capacitor but holds a charge longer.
When the battery is not charged to full potential it does not filter this sawtooth wave form and when a load is applied Hi revs the sawtooth will proportionally increase which is passed on thru out the system.
That is why it is breaking up at hi revs.
This is not good for the electronic components either!

Absolutely!
Guys, what about the gel-pack-in-the-carb thing? His throttle symptoms seem consistent with gelpack issues.
Oakland:
There has been much discussion on this forum on the subject of carbs on anyh of these assemble-it-yourself ChinQuads. Knowledgeable persons have stated that the machines often come with a gelpack in the float bowl designed to cushion the float while in transit. The gel dissolves in gasolilne, but the secret to success is to allow the machine to idle for 30 minutes or so the first time you fire it up. Doing this will dissolve the gel slowly and allow it to pass through the carb & engine without problems. Loading the engine (IE: Riding the quad) before this gel is dissolved causes the gel to clog the carb.
I have no experience on the subject, but your throttle problems seem consistent with this theory. It sounds like you pretty much fired it up and took off down the driveway (like we all WANT to do) IF that's what's happening here then you'll need to disassemble and clean the carb.

nope not to harsh, it would have taken all but 5 minutes to research the sunl group and atv discounters, to late now. sunlsucks.com will give you information about both atv discounters and the sunl group

Thanks to everyone who had something helpful to add.
I ripped out the carb, no sign of any gell or anything (but would there be?). A friend of mine is blowing out the jets as we speak to see if that helps any.
Also, I took out the battery and hooked it right to a jumper and the electric start or lights still wont work. If I kick start it and get it running then the lights work and when you press the electric start button you can here trying to engage, but again as soon as you shut it off it is totally dead.

Ok,
For the power, follow the red wire from the battery forward. There should be a piece it attaches to as well as a ground, which then has a wire going to the starter. Make sure that wire from the battery to that unit is good. It might be disconnected or loose. This would prevent battery power from getting to the starter.
