son got stuck in the mud and it wont start now. HELP!

We just got a new 110cc atv and while riding my son thought he could make it through the mud. He got stuck but the engine kept running. After i pulled him out it ran fine and i had him drive it up and park it. We turned it off for a while and now when i go to start it, the starter just wines and it wont turn over. The air filter stayed above water so i dont think water got into the carb. Should i take the starter off to see if its wet and clean it out or is it something else? Thanks for any help Jeff

I took the other side off and it was full of mud. So I'm going to take a guess that's why it's not turning over. What should I do to prevent it from happening again? It does have a seal but should I take it off and get some silicone? If so what kind? Also should I re-oil the small chain before I put it back together? And lastly if you look at the pictures the first one is how he did it (I thought it was pretty funny at first) and the second one is where the mud was and is the center bolt for kick starting it if the electric start doesn't work, There is an access port on the outside of the cover to get to it? And do they sell an adapter for it to start it?

I finally got it after working on it all weekend and I finally found where the mud was hiding. Here are some pick for the new people in case mud gets into the flywheel case.
First I took off the center bolt. I used a strap wrench to hold the wheel in place. It was a pain to get it off but that's all I had. Watch the knuckles I took a couple of layers of skin off of mine (where gloves). I barrowed the puller from Auto Zone. Go with the bigger one the first one they gave me was a 2 ton and it was too small. When you pull the fly wheel off be ready I thought it would come slowly but it popped off and I thought I broke something.

Here's the pick with the mud caked in. I guess when the chain spins the bearings engage the flywheel.

Removed everything and cleaned them out. The spring was jammed in with mud and finally they popped lose.

This is what it looks like clean. I hope this helps, good luck
