Default Help choosing ATV for my son

I have decided to buy my 7 year old son an ATV for Christmas. I have been reading everything I can on the forum the last 2 months. I was originally going to buy him an off-brand ATV but I can't do it after reading so many negative posts. The problem is that I have 8 kids and my time is very limited. I don't have time to fix things so reliability is very, very important to me.

Initially my son will just ride it around the yard. My son is 7 but is pretty small for his age. I expect my other 5 boys to ride it sometimes but none of them are daredevils. I expect to hand it down to the younger ones.

This is a surprise and I don't want to take him to the ATV store. So I was looking for a little help on sizing. He is exactly 48" tall.

Thanks for any help and I love the forum!

At 7yrs and 4' tall I would buy a 90 for him. I bought our 6yr old son a Sportsman 90 this year and he's vertically challenged for his age. He does great.

But on the flip side, if you have 5 boy's waiting in line maybe you shold get a smaller 50 and ages three through seven can all take turns (but that opens up another can of arguements )..

Good luck !

Wow, eight kids..... Catholic ?

I am leaning towards the Honda TRV-90. But have become interested in the Eton. It is not a brand I have ever heard of. Anyone have an opinion on Eton?

Eton is a very good brand made in Taiwan. A good overall quad, without the higher sticker price.

Good luck, and welcome to the forums bartturner.

i was looking at the can-am's this past friday for a replacement for our grandkids baja 70, these are pretty nice, they use a cvt transmission, come with a 3 year warranty, prices that were quoted were ds 50 1399, ds70, if i remember right was 1899 and the 90 outlaw was 2300. the 90 outlaw was a real nice looking atv while the ds were just ok.

Bought my son, now 9, a 06 TRX90 back in 2005 when he was 7 and never looked back. I also did research on other brands before I decided on the Honda. Other than oil changes and one drive chain adjustment, the quad has been maintenance free.

Sure enough it lacks features that other brands have, mainly a reverse and lights, but it has that dependable Honda 90 engine and he rides the living devil out of it. My only complaint? It's cold natured!

Lately I have noticed that a Honda dealer in the Southaven MS area is advertising brand new 06 TRX 90s for $1999 on television.

In case you do decide to buy a brand name, be sure to look at the name stamped on the motor.

The Can am 250's and smaller aren't rotax motors, like they advertise. They're made in Taiwan, and just have the Can am decals.
