Default "Race ready" youth quads ?

I've been looking at the DRR(water cooled version) and the Apex. My son (8yrs) has been on an extreme Tantrum 70 since age 6. Last summer we messed up and let him race at a county fair and now he has the bug.

I was just wondering if there are any other options that I've not found or seen. Price isn't a huge influence; I don't mind paying a little more for durability/reliability but the cobra at $8000+ seems just "a little accessive" and maybe just a little beyond his current abilities. LOL

Just watch out for the cobra ,alot of atv races wont let the high end race quads in such as hetrick or cobra .my daughters race what basically is a extreme 125 typhoon with a crf 50 motor pumped up to 125 with a 125 kit and 16 hp,most kids that are really racing are running up to about 16-18 hp out of a 2 stroke 90 most stock 90 only produce about 7-9 hp ..
I live in Ct and the new england atv that sponsors the race lets the 50-90cc class run 125 4 strokes. The quad cost me 1500 ,the kit is 1500 and about 1000 in extras which isnt bad for a quad that has 16hp and is as fast as a fully raced out drx or drr that will cost about 5-6 thousand when your done, check out ebay though you can usually pick up a good used kids fully raced out quad for cheap.
eton and apex pro and apex shark are good. The quads that my daughters ride are roketa 125 also known as viva or extreme typhoon 125 that come in 70 and 90 and are wide racey and stable ,I bought them from county imports but I wouldnt buy anything from them they scamed me and my broter in law, just search the web and you will find them at another location.

good luck

It's funny you mentioned that. There is a small dealer that sold us his extreme 70 right by my house. He also sells the Typhoons now. I've concidered the Typhoon and a motor out of somthing else. A new Typhoon is cheap enough to do that and still come out ahead.

His birthday isn't until April so I have a little time to figure out what to do.

I do like the idea of the DRR and the Apex being water cooled. This will be his trail quad as well as his race quad......at least until the time comes that his skills and eagerness to race and level of competition get to the point that reguires a dedicated purpose built race machine.

Thanks for the reply and the ideas popeye.

Here are some hopped up motors. Some are not priced to bad. http://www.mxmotorsports.us/mini_parts_s/6.htm

I have to say... I just bought my son a 2008 DRX 90. He hasn't even gotten to ride it yet because of the snow, but in terms of suspension travel and usable power, and quality.... it is light years ahead of his 2005 Predator 90 and his 2007 Outlaw 90. He is 8 and will be 9 in July. He is an experienced rider who even at just over 4 feet and 50 lbs has gone above and beyond the Polaris machines in skill level. If you want a fully race ready machine that will run competively against the cobras spend 2000-3000 dollars and by a DRX. Last year kids on DRXs annihilated the competition in D6 and D4, and as any seasoned racer will tell you D6 is the best comparison to National Level Competition.

Whatch what you buy for preasembeled motors, most are only 8 hp ,the higher 1400-2000 dollar ones are 13 hp ,takegawa 125+r kit (you still need a motor and can only be a crf or xr 50-70)is the only one ive seen produce 16 hp the complete kit with carb is $2600 and the
lite kite the head ,.cylinder and other parts are $1500 and are put out only by 2 brothers racing.

I have not seen a cobra ,only online videos ,but from what I have been told buy alot of people and some atv associations is that there just to fast and destroy every quad ,the only ones that keep up are the super high end modified hetrick and high modified drr and apex quads and must be put in a seperate class and alot of those kids have been riding for 4-5 years and look like pro riders..theres different classes though for quads look ijto your local atv race association ,certain classes will only let you modify certain things ,stock class ,super stock ,just like drag race classes. My kids quads I can only go up to 125 cc 4 stroke 90cc 2 stroke ,stock cases same motor original in quad ,no frame or geometry changes,
she doesnt need to go any faster she scares the hell out of me at it is .
good luck

One has to keep in mind the area and rules in which you will be riding. Eastern MN the DRX90 isn't even in the same class as the predator and outlaw. The DRX would have to run the 90 production and the predator, outlaw, Eton, Ect run the stock class.
The races that I have seen in our area the quads that are brought straight off the show room floor really don't do well, our 90 production class pretty much has two rules. It has to use the stock engine case, and the stock frame. Your imagination can take it from there.

Here in PA and NY (D4 and D6) Apex, DRR, Polaris, Eton, Honda, etc..... all run the same class. Typically against Cobra. They have made a seperate Cobra class at most tracks but the DRR and Apex still race in the stock, production, and unlimited ranks.
