Coil lead test
#1
I've been trying to isolate why my E-ton Viper 90R doesn't have spark. The issue that has me stumped now is that when I test my coil leads (there are only 2), they both have continuity to ground. They also have continuity to each other. This doesn't sound right to me. Just to be clear.....the coil is unhooked during this test.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice?
Thanks.
P.S. I've already tried a new CDI (85.00) and am reluctant to just start throwing parts at it.

To add to my confusion, I would expect one of the leads to be going to ground and the other to at least NOT be going to ground and that they SHOULDN'T have continuity between the two but I could be wrong. My initial test leads me to believe that I might have a short somewhere in the system but so far I haven't uncovered one. This quad has nothing short of 5 miles of wire in what I would consider a haphazzard wire loom.
Anyway, I know there are some pro's out there that can steer me in the right direction.
Thanks again.

Try the Link below and it will show you haw to check your coil as well as the stator. More than likely your problem is going to be related to the stator/generator. This one is very common for not working when it gets out of adjustment or gets covers in dirt or mud.
I would say that 9-out of 10 etons that come in the shop here for a no start condition ends up being the air gap or the stator is covered in rust or dirt.

Thanks for the link.
I performed the coil test and it passed the first one but the second coil test was questionable. Not questionable enough for me to think it's bad yet. I still have to do the AC Generator test.
I've performed the airgap test and it's fine but I haven't taken the flywheel off yet. Judging by the outside appearance of the flywheel, I can't imagine that it's dirty on the inside but I'm out of options and I'll do that next.
Any thoughts on why my dash panel might be dead? You don't suppose that the "no spark" issue is related to the dash panel do you? I know these E-tons will not start if they're in gear and since my dash panel is dead, I don't even get the blinking "N" to let me know.
Is there a failsafe way to make certain it's in Neutral?
I suppose that if I have to, I'll just start throwing parts at it until I get it running.
The damn thing is just a big weedeater motor with a belt driven tranny.....I can't believe it's giving me this much trouble.

Thanks for the help so far.
I've finally gotten my dash to come to life (bad connection) and it is indeed in "N".
I contacted E-ton tech support and they are emailing me instructions on how to test the CDI. I didn't think it was possible but he indicated that it was...even for the Viper 90R.
So....depending on how that goes we'll see what happens next.
If the CDI is indeed bad, I'm gonna have a tough time getting E-ton to take it back. FYI.....E-ton America only charges 5.95 for all shipping, including fenders and it's a breeze ordering parts from them on-line.
