HELP LT80 starter problems
#1
After putting in new top end the bike started right up. But after a couple times starting the starter went out.
It would make a whinning noise but not start.
got a new starter and it started right up but same thing happened after a day of use the new starter starts making the same noise but not starting the engine.
Anyone have any ideas? It's driving me nuts trying to figure out why we've gone thru two starters this fast.

I'm new here and also a new owner of a couple of old lt80's.....so don't listen to me too much!
Sounds like the started is working, but not the solenoid. Not sure why that would happen so quickly to a new start. I'm sure someone will chime in with ideas for you. Just curious....how bad of a job is it to change the starter on these little quads? I just tore into the clutch on one of mine over the weekend (actually got to take it apart like 3 times!). That first time was horrible. I don't think anyone has ever done anything to this quad so it was really hard getting that clutch cover off. I now need a couple of new allen head bolts to replace the ones that were abused trying to get them loosened.

Changing the starter really isn't that bad. Undo the bolt connecting the frame. Get a bar and pry the engine up and you can get the the starter bolts a lot easier.
If you stand the quad up its a whole lot easier to get to the starter too.

My sons LT 80 is doing the same thing. Now this bike is new to me so Im still learning the way the mechanics work on it. I was looking at a part diagram and I dont see a starter seliniod or how one would work on this set up. It looks like the starter spins a gear assemby that stays engaged to the starter gear. So im guessing what we should be looking at replacing is that starter gear assembly. I would assume this gear assembly has a 1 way bearing in it that is gong bad. I hope someone that knows how this thing works for sure will chime in.

On my bike the starter is spinning like cray but not engaging. Every so often it tries to engage and grinds. I dont see this seliniod that your talking about just a starter motor and gear assembly.

Mine is doing the same thing. Starter wont engage, just spins. I have tried to get the starter out. Not enough clearance. Do you need to remove carburator? Do you need to take starter apart first? I have left side cover off. Motor mount off. Foot pegs off. It is still just hitting the crankcase itself. Any suggestions?
