03' Predator 90cc - Head Light?
#1
I have a 2003 90cc Predator which didn't come with a headlight. Looking to put an after market headlight on this for my boy. My only concern is ..Will adding a 50watt headlight kill the battery and will the charging system keep up? I planed to use a fuse-able link and switch wired directly to the battery. I'm not exactly sure what the stator is capable of to help the battery recover....etc.
Thanks

I dont have any experience with the Predator....but I did up a very nice, bright usable headlight on my sons 2 stroke 1988 Suzuki LT80 VERY successfully.

I went to WalMart and found a set of driving lights that would look appropriate on the front of the quad....even found some blue tinted ones, which works great cause it has a blue frame and blue accents around the ATV. They cost me $18 or something like that.....plenty cheap enough.
It had a 55 watt H3 bulb in it....I found a 25 watt H3 bulb in eBay for $5....so I ordered it up. Seems the stock charging system has about 30 watts spare power, give or take. I wasnt going to spend the big money on an improved stator so I had to change out the bulb. Honestly, I dont see any difference in the brightness between the two bulbs - maybe that has to do with the focused beam....at any rate that 25 watt bulb is PLENTY bright to drive in pitch black night, no issues at all. They do have some LED replacement H3 bulbs.....but I didnt want to experiment so I went with what I knew would be bright enough.
I have played with some of the LED driving lights at some autoparts stores....seems like it would be perfect - in reality they are so dim they are worse then a plain 1157 tail light bulb.....very pathetic. Guess they are mostly for looks, they cast NO light to speak of.....atleast not the three pair I played with.
I wired the driving light up direct to the battery with a fuse and a switch (included in driving light kit). I also bought a red trailer clearance light like this one ($3):

I connected it to the switch as well and mounted it on the back to give him a tail light. One flip of the switch and hes got headlight to the front and a red tail light in the back. He rides across town to his grandmas house sometimes and has to come back when its getting dark.....works great. Total cost was under $30....cant beat that.
In addition this LT80 also has TUSK grip heaters....which are said to draw about 30 watts. In theory having the lights and the heaters on should put a decent draw on the battery.....in reality we have never had this ATV not start, even after lengthy rides. None-the-less I expect it to not start and keep a set of jumper cables in my quad to get him going of need me - so far they have not been needed.
