Lt80 starting issue?
#1
I went out to the shed yesterday to start my sons lt80. It has sat for a month or so. All I heard was a humming coming from the area of the battery. So I hooked up the battery charger and the light indicated full charge and switched to maintenance mode. I havent gotten back to it yet but wanted to see if I am missing something. I replaced the battery this past summer. Any thoughts?

Went out to give it a try see if it would turn over? Pushed the red dot....nothing! Same humming buzzing sounds coming from the area front of the battery under the plastic. No time to mess with it but my brother in law gave me an idea. Since it was fine the last time I used it Maybe...a mouse nest in the starter? Any further ideas?

I've seen them before.
The starter is under the carburator. Is that's what's making noise?
You should be able to look in the inspection hole (left heel) to see if there is mouse nest. I'd think it'd be obvious.
You may try removing the fan cover and fan (right heel) to make sure there is no nest in the stator area.
Ok, we better check to see if the motor is hydraulic locked. Remove the spark plug, cover hole with rag, KEEP PLUG CAP AWAY*spark*boom*, and see if it turns over. Just tap the button cuz if this is it, fuel will spray fast and hard out the hole.*spark* BOOMSpam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word ...LOL
If full of fuel:: remove the fuel hose from the carb. Turn motor over (changing rags) till most all the mist is gone. Install plug, apply full throttle till it starts and cleans out.
To sum up the problem and fix, go to advanced auto, kart shop, lawn mower shop, etc. and get a simple on/off valve.
Better clean the carb anyways.
I bet this is the problem.

The hum is definately coming from the area front of battery under plastic. Would this hydralic lock situation happen within a months time? What is actually making the hum noise when the start button is pushed? Sounds as if something is locked up....lol. No ticking or any sign of the motor wanting to turn over. Sounds like an electronic noise. Thanks for the advice. I will give it a try asap

It can happen overnight. Fuel leaks by the float needle/seat and fills the motor w/fuel.
The starter wants to torn but cannot because fuel won't compress.
Pull the plug, you'll find out quick enough.

Hi LT80, I'm ready to sell the 80 since my son moved to a 250ex. Great move for him. The 80 has been a great quad. I can get it running after fooling with it and jumping it with the 250. The old problem was gas leaking out of petcock. I replaced it and still happened. Cheap ebay one, so I now have the open/close valve in gas line. Now the issue is I hear the click of me hitting the start button and nothing else. I keep hitting the start button and have it on the jumper cables and eventually it turns over. Originally it took so long to start after turning over and over it killed the battery. So right now it is one click each time I hit the start button and nothing. Eventually it will turnover. I assume starter is fine since it will eventually start turning over and eventually start. That happens only after hitting the start button 20-50 times. Thoughts?

I was thinking the starter is bad. I can't see a relay all of a suden working.
To check the starter:: there is a plug in under the gas tank on the right side that goes to the starter. Wiggle that down and apart and use a 12 volt supply directly to the wire that goes toward the front/starter.
Starter spins easy and consistant, it must be good.
