I’m new to these forums but really hoping someone has an idea about this confussing issue.
03 E-Ton YXL 150 with spark issues.
Sometimes it will start and sometimes it won’t. When it starts, it runs great and does not cut off. Once I cut the atv off, the spark becomes very intermediate and sometimes there no spark at all.
- I have a neutral light
- Brake light switch is bypassed and wires are permanently connected
- resistance is within spec on ignition coil and pick up coil
- i’ve tried another ignition coil and it does the same thing
Whats confussing me:
- when I unplug the stator and pickup coil wire, it still has spark for the first 1-2 seconds of turning over the engine (does the same thing whether the stater wire is connected or not)
- the cdi box is humming or buzzing while Key is on
- when I continuously turn over the engine and rapidly turn Kill switch on/off, the spark intermediately returns.
- seems like it only consistently has spark for the first one or two seconds of turning on the ignition system. After that the spark is intermediate and sporadic. Sometimes there’s no spark at all
any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m leaning towards a CDI problem but I’m not aware of how to diagnose the CDi on an eton with 100% certainty. It looks like the cheapest CDI box I can find is $120. I really don’t want to order just guessing
CDI should not be making any noise.. you can find them on ebay for about $20. i always order 2 as most sellers have a quantity discount and its always nice to have a spare.
Thanks for the reply. I wish I could find one of those $20 CDIs. Cheapest one I can find is 130 on eBay . Here’s a picture of the type I have. It has two ground wires coming out of it. If you know of a cheaper one that would work, I love the link. I had a couple cheap Chinese CDI’s laying around and tried them but they don’t work on this bike.
ETons are different, that is why they have expensive CDIs. The key switch and CDI are wired with an "earth to run" kill wire system. I can't say if all ETons are that way but most of them are. Easy check, remove CDI plug, put ignition to on and kill switch to run. If it is earth to run, kill wire should test as earthed at CDI plug. Switch ignition off and kill wire will be open circuit. This means you can use a Chinese cheapo CDI if you disconnect the kill wire. It needs to be the same pin-out and you won't be able to stop the engine unless you short the kill wire to earth but, for testing purposes, is a lot cheaper than buying a new ETon CDI and finding that wasn't the faulty part.
merryman , can you get me the color codes to wires to cdi.... working on a yukon 150 with a harness that has been cut , owner tried to put ac cdi in not dc cdi... all the elec diagram shows is colors , not placement
Afraid not, you need someone who has a Yukon to photograph the wires going into the CDI. Alpha Sports may be able to help, being The ETon spares specialist they know more about them than anyone else.
