If I unhook the hose going to air filter and place my hand over the hose it will start and idle but as soon as I take my hand off it dies. Any ideas would be great. I have no idea what year it is.

 

You are in effect running it "on choke". An engine that will only run when choked is running weak, usually due to a partly blocked jet in the carb. Remove the float bowl and jets, then clean the jets out with compressed air, Blow through the holes they came out of too.

 

If it still has a issue after that, do a compression test.
