Thinking of Sportsman 90 for first ATV for kids
#1
My son is 13 and is about 5'5, I would like to have a quad with reverse and I keep coming back to the Polaris...looking for used.
One big question is the 2-stroke/4- stroke debate.
I haven't heard either of these run, so how quiet is the 2-stroke? Safe bet it's not like a Honda 250R..lol.
We do have some hills on our property to torque pulling away from a stop is key.
What years should I seek, or avoid. I'm a Honda fan but sadly the TRX 90 never came with reverse.
All options are open, welcome to all input and criticism.

Don't think the 90 2 stroke Polaris had reverse either, they are so easy to push, most makers don't bother. A 90cc two stroke is usually a lot livelier than the equivalent four stroke. Never had anything to do with Polaris 4 strokes though. The Yamaha Grizzly/Breeze 125 is quite a good kids bike with reverse, very slow for a 125, which may be no bad thing. Quiet, and was made for many years, so parts should be easy to get.

If he's that age and size, I'd look for something a little bigger like a Honda Recon. He's already too big for a tiny quad like a 90. The Recon is a great first quad and they can take a beating and keep running. Plenty of power but not so much power that a new rider can't handle it. Suzuki Ozark is another great choice. I've owned both. The Ozark I bought was actually ridden by a girl about your son's age, maybe even a bit younger. Reverse is a little easier to engage on the Ozark and it has slightly more power.

Yes a little 90 is to small for him now... My 12 year old is now riding a can am 450 and she fits on it just right... Yes i know some people are going to say its to big for her... but i have had her riding her own machine since she was 2 and have spent lots of times teaching her right. She rides more responsible that most of the adults i know and knows her limits and stays well within them.. Heck i have fallen asleep while she has been doubling me on my machine since i trust her driving..LOL
If all depends on the skill level of your child on how big of a machine you get but i would stay away from anything under the 125-150 size range

Sorry for the late reply, I did find a Grizzly 125 that was in good shape for a real.good price, well, for the current market it seems so..lol.
I had to replace a brake cable and the seat cover and with that I'm in it for right about $900.
The Grizzly 125 seems to be a great starter ATV for my kids size, I'd rather them learn how to handle a lighter machine real well before moving up
I agree, anything less than a 125 would definitely be too small.
