Yes you really need to change it. After my second oil change there where still little aluminum pieces in the oil filter. Not sure how well the shop cleaned it the first time.

I'm running Maxtor semi-syntic 40W in mine.

Most definitely change the oil after the first hour. I run Castrol 10W40 full synthetic and change my oil after every weekend's outing.
I run Honda's HP transmission oil also, 80/85W. You'll be amazed how many metal shavings will be in your filter, if you've got the metal reuseable filter anyway. Change oil often!!

Since the cannondaes have separate oil for engine and transmission/clutch can you use an automotive oil in the engine? Like a Mobil 1 full synthetic? Seems like a really good design.

Yes you can, the owners manual tells what viscosity of oil you can run, 10W40 is a good all around choice. For maximum protection, I choose to run a full synthetic, Wal-Mart sells Castrol for $4.25 a quart I believe.
