I just changed my oil for the first time. The dealer had already changed the breakin oil before I bought it. Anyhow when I pull out my oil filter the left side of the crank case it has metal filings on the filter. Is this a problem or is some filings expected because of being gear driven?

Its normal for the first couple of times. Nothing to worry about. Thats why those first oil changes are so crucial.

Yeah, shavings for a couple oil chnages here too. I seemed to have more in my transmission side though. Nothing to worry about, just keep changing your oil regularly and you will be fine......JIM

An add on to this question. What kind of oil do you use Synthetic, Synthetic blend, or just regular oil and what weights.

klotz racing oil and maxima transmission oil(my dealer used). This is the first time I have changed the oil. I used the same. I also had a hard time getting the metal oil filter by the rear shock, needing some suggestions.

if you change your oil and clean your filters every other ride you really dont need to clean the filter by the rear shock
its a coarse filter,not a fine filter
the last time i cleaned mine it wasnt even dirty
if im not mistaken its also a return filter so in theory the oil should already be filtered prior to reaching this area
somebody correct if im wrong here...

Your right. As long as you change your oil regularly, your okay on the rear filter. The only trick I've found, cut a cheap 14mm wrench in half. This gives you alot more room in there to turn a wrench on it. I'm just going to pull mine every 6 months to clean it. I think this will be sufficent.

We run Honda HP4 20W50 in the engine and Honda 80W Transmission oil in the trannys.

I agree with the majority here on the rear filter issue.
