Logging road irony
#31
Mystery solved! I was just confronted by a guy who accused me of riding on that logging road. He was quite angry about it and said he had been talking to the county forester and the game warden to keep ATV'ers off the road. He said he had a right to hike on that trail without being disturbed by noisy machines and choking on their exhaust. He was a bit irrational. I did get him to admit that he seldom saw any ATV's on that trail, but he said he see's a lot of tracks.
Amazing how much some people hate ATVs. This guy was apparently choking and plugging his ears whenever he saw an ATV track.
I also pointed out to him that the hiking is a lot better if you go through the woods instead of always following dusty loggiing roads.
And, no, I hadn't been riding on that road.

ever wonder why, in a written medium, peoplewhodontpunctuateorspaceanything are considered morons?
All we have to go on is your written word. If it is incoherent and unreadable, you have firmly placed yourself in the moron category.

Good grief! I'll admit my post wasn't up to Shakespearian standards, but you seem to be jumping on me like I'm illiterate.
Or, maybe you were referring to another post. You didn't make yourself clear. Clarity of reference also helps communication.

In reading the posts I would guess the management of the posted road is the responsibility of the County? Keep in mind that the same political process that has apparently denied access to the road can be used to obtain access. The county commissioners cannot arbitrarily use the county government process to close roads. They are political beings, they must abide by laws, they have county commission meetings where 500 irate citzens can bring them to task for what they have done............Use this process to your advantage............After all, its the "rights of the minorities" but its the "rule of the majority"........keep that in mind...........Tass

Tass: You sure got that right, but I guess I'm not effective when it comes to politics. On advice of a friend who said that ATV's are too much of a lightning rod, I constructed my request to cover just snowmobiles. I got 40 names on a petition to open that road, including the landwoners living closest to it who might object to noise. I took a picture of the road, clearly showing heavy use by motorized traffic. I gps'ed the trail and a second "foot-traffic-only" trail 700 feet away and put them on a map to show a duplication of restricted trails. I put the map, photo and a written proposal in a package that I provided to the five members of the County Forestry, Parks & Recreation committee. And, I got on the agenda for their Dec. 22 meeting. There was no one at the meeting who objected to opening that road. Several people spoke in favor. The county forest administrator said he could see no enviromental harm in allowing snowmobiles to use that trail a couple of months out of the year.
However, two of the three committee members present voted to reject the request. They referred to some vague, unwritten policy about not opening trails for "small groups." They said they didn't want to open a "can of worms" by granting our request. Ironically, they are in the process of bulldozing a new park in the county forest for horse riders, giving them space to park their trailers while riding on the public trails. It would seem they were opening a barrel of worms with that one. Our request, just to open a gate on an existing road, is nothing in comparison. Only politics can explain it. I guess I need some lessons from the horse riders.

Your observation is correct, you need to get close to the horsey crowd for some influence by trading support. What can your ATV group offer that might be appealing to the powers that be is the initial issue with who to approach with that offering being part of the key to solving your problem. Accomplishing almost any objective is normally a series of give and take compromises and that process becomes very pronounced when politics are involved. Don't expect an even trade if you're just breaking into that group, accept some crumbs to show your willingness to cooperate and somewhere you'll find the right button to push.
