one could also argue that once honda put the 250 engine in their frame, more people bought them, more people riding = more injuries.

The demise (outlawing) of the atc came by way of its unstable platform / suspension- not the engine. they would wheelie over or roll sideways super easily- regardless of the engine. I owned a few and they were all twitchy as hell at any speed.
Also- no one wanted the 3 wheels when they could have 4.

Not sure how limiting engine size is Communistic... But I think that if consumers believe there is reason for larger engines, then they'll get them. People will always find a limit, be it gas, weight, price... The engines will reach a threshold where they're not practical, I bet it's about 1000cc.

Cool how big is too big.

Well lets see. It has been a couple years since I started this thread... much has changed.
Just came back from my dealer, and had to think real hard NOT to make a new purchase today. Turns out the machine I was looking at was the 800 Mud machine from CanAm. What you say, that is sacrilege... I am a hypocrite. Well yes I am in a way. For a couple reasons. First, the way I use ATV's has changed. My old style Rubicon, that has been absolutely trouble free for over 10 years has reached a point where I Can't do some of the work I need to do with it. I pull trees, stumps etc with it, and it has never let me down, but my body is getting to the point where I need a little more. (Currently healing from bypass surgery, and really need power steering) the 800 R X mr comes set up for mud running, but it also has huge tractor like 30 in tires and heavy duty rhino axles. IE beefy. Something I am lacking with the Rubicon.
Yes the 800 twin has way more HP than my 500, but I can honestly say I have never had an issue of not having enough power. Not having enough tire or traction is one issue I HAVE had though, so these monster tires look like they should work better hauling logs. Only time will tell.
Understand, my needs are pretty specific, and this machine fits the bill better than my 500. So I guess I am man enough to say I may have been wrong. But it did stimulate the conversation. Now finding the funds to make that purchase is the next challenge.

Glad you're getting a quad that will meet all your needs. Watch the 800 a little bit. It can wheelie even with the big 30" mud tires. It's a stump puller. We've all been wrong and will be wrong again at some point. Appreciate your posting it!!! Me, I'm never wrong... Okay, okay, seldom... Okay, okay, sometimes... Okay, often!!! Those lightning bolts are tough to dodge.

YOu think I should put some weight on the front to counter that tendancy? I have had my front come up on my rubicon before too. It can happen so fast you don't have time to react sometimes. I usually use my winch to break stuff free. Then drag them. I haven't had enough traction usually to worry about. those monster tires look like they could give way more traction to the mix though.

For the type of riding and work that I do 500cc suits me fine. Most of the people I ride with now have 500+ machines. Many complain that they want a challenging ride but they keep buying bigger and bigger machines which actually makes things less of a challenge.

They have a pretty good throttle that can be feathered pretty easily. Just takes some time to get used to the kind of power they have on tap.

My 500 is fine in almost every condition with the exception of long steep uphills where the trail is wide enough to pin it without worrying about bashing into trees and rocks. Just doesn't have enough in the snow and even dry conditions in this circumstance for my large moose-like body. For my riding style a 650 or 700 class machine would be perfect.

Not that I'd ever want to talk any one out of buying a can-am because I love'em, but I'm wondering if maybe just a sportsman 800 (not the xp) would do what you're looking for just fine, and save you a few thousand. You'll have to put your larger tires on it, but I think the polaris chassis is better equipped for pulling.

buying a can-am to pull stumps and do yard work is sorta like buying a corvette to tow a bass boat to the lake

but- if you do go with the can-am- you'll instantly go up 10 cool points on the coolness scale

also- the can-am cvt's engage at higher rpm- kinda makes them a little jumpy off the line- maybe look into a clutch kit if you buy the outty....
