Engine size
#42
I believe the argument that market drives the sport is kind of a misnomer. You see advertizements that tout my motor is bigger than yours, or our machine has a higher top speed etc. all the time. The adds also do not push the idea of matching engine size to skill level and expected use. So no I do not buy that argument. I do agree with your comment regarding needs predecating engine selection though. BUT, the converse to that argument is that I think you would find a a way to get the job done with a smaller engine, and I also think you can find a way to have just as much fun with a 500 as you could with a 1000. I think there is a certain amount of self convincing going on there as well. Am I a communist for asking the question or stimulating reasonable debate? That is pretty low ball comment don't you think? I think that is what makes America great. the ability to talk about issues and have differing points of view makes us different.

although I'm a sucker for big powerful motors- I can't imagine a time where I'd need the power of a 1000cc atv on a trail (won't stop me from buying one tho
) maybe the dedicated mudders spinning 30 - 35" mud tires...
I can honestly say I've never seen an ad claiming to have an atv that's faster than the other one on the dealers floor- more powerful, yes, but only in a more utility aspect.
My new can-am 800 max xt had warning & caution stickers all over it- I pulled off maybe 15 of them. One warning sticker right near the shifter on my can-am even said something like " WARNING: this atv is a high performance machine that has considerably more power than the average atv and should not be operated by anyone younger than 16 or inexperienced in the sport"
there's only so many warnings you can give someone- some people just don't belong on an atv- I've known a few that have no business being on a big-bore atv

Just kidding. I can honestly say the 500 wasn't doing it for me, especially on winter rides. Between the weight of the Sportsman X2 500 and my svelte 350 lbs. I couldn't keep up with the other guys ahead of me. And I was following someone who knew the trails.... I think the extra 150 ccs of engine will be a definite boost in keeping up in the snow and on those long wide open hill climbs.

Same logic as testing ice, and tree branches. I had a friend who was 45 lbs. lighter than me. I let him go out on ice and branches first. I figured if he broke through the ice or snapped the branch I didn't have a chance.
