Okay, now Greatest Drummers!
My $.02
Kieth Moon--good drummer, innovative mostly by accident, not real thought out but had good seat-of-the-pants playing style.
John Bonham---Oh Bonzo, what can ya say. Played way inside his own world, knew how to make his parts work with a song so well, and in his soloing had types of talent rarely seen. He would lead with right foot and left hand, (backwards) and switch to leading with left foot and right hand, and then back to conventional right foot-right hand. Incredible originality. Frenzied huge speed. I watch his stuff to this day and just shake my head.
Neil Peart--The professor. My first concert was Pat Travers and Rush in 1978. Saw them many times after that and have studied Peart like a college course for over 25 years now. Precise, extremely well thought out, brilliantly executed live, the most complete rock drummer ever.
Lots of other great drummers out there, Steve Smith, Bill Bruford, Steve Gadd, many more. But ask any of them who is the undeniable and undisputed master so far in history, and they will all agree.
Buddy Rich. Saw him live from like 30 feet away, and it was unf$%*#$%^believable. Grew up listening to him. Nobody else is even in the same galaxy.
I've played drums since I could walk in the mid 60's, my great grandad played drums, my grandad played drums, and my dad still makes money playing jazz trumpet. I know just enough to know there are a lot of really good players out there we'll never hear from due to the nature of the music business.
