I love the old muscle cars and have owned several and ridden or driven many others (I'm really old and was growing up in that era). They are beautifully sculpted, auto art deco, and fun in their mechanical simplicity. But any time I start getting too misty-eyed about owning one again I just take a drive in a 60's car and that usually cures it.

I'm quite happy with my Mustang Cobra with a little air squeezer on it, it's faster than all those old muscle cars save for a few of the one-off types, gets 20 mpg and will actually turn and stop.

But I still will probably build another old one before I quit turning wrenches anyway.

Yep faster, at least compared to the GTO's, 440 Road Runner, Hemi Cuda, 460 Fairlane GTA (my last one), assorted big block mustangs and chargers I've been in. 'Course my Cobra's not stock either.

Them cars can be made fast, but they didn't come of the showroom floor that fast, most of them were 14 and 15 second cars a few of them would go 13's but not that many.

I guess the point I was driving at is, don't go buy a muscle car just to go fast, you get one for the panache and style. You can make any of a host of modern cars go way faster than those things did, and many items you buy off the showroom floor will run away from the majority of the old ones too.

I agree stock to stock heads up todays cars have a huge advantage.Problem with me is I cant keep anything stock has to be out of control, it is never fast enough. We have a 2003 cobra with 670 rear wheel horsepower it is a ton of fun, you get the best of both wolds but the pricetag of 40k plus hurts.
