Hello was wondering if anyone here has seen or ever heard of a particular 4x4 being converted into a wrecker for pulling out 4 wheel atv's was needing to know this info because one is going to be needed in this area with the new Hatfield McCoy trail going in my buddy and I was debating over maybe using a 6 wheel atv what do you all think???

I think the Cochranton, PA, Poker Run staff might have some valuable information and experience regarding ATV recovery and evacuation.

With about 6,000 ATV's on the trails in a single day, some disabled machines must be accounted for.

yeah, I seem to remember pulling Tree Farmer out of the mud at Cochranton last year? Then something about his winch cable?

 

pflueeb, I seem to remember pulling you out of the mud at Salamanca last year!

On our last ride out by the airport I pulled so many quads out of the mud (including Rossi's), that my Bayou was christened "The Colonel's Tow Truck".

All the guy needs is a Mudrunner equipped Bayou and a $14 towrope from Wal-Mart. It works for me.

OK, so this a little off the subject.. But, at the first mudrun I ever attended,(Cole Bottom Road Run) there was a clapped out Datsun 4x4 pickup that had NO windows, doors, or bed... It had big tires on it (that didnt match) they had cutting torched the fenderwells for more clearance, it had a gen-pole setup with an electric winch welded to the rear frame where the bed used to live.. The exhaust system came thru the hood, above the cab, and turned back... along with a big air intake duct running right beside it... It WAS "FUGLY"" but that thing was driven thru catfish ponds and the Sabine river to extract quads.

 

Never tried it, but I think a Polaris 6x6 platform would be best for a few reasons.

1. If you tow or winch someone out, those things weigh as much as a truck, so they won't slide as easy.

2. If you really want a tow-truck type deal, you could probaly take off the bed and make a flat bed and make a winch setup somehow.

I was riding in this river area that had lots of local in big trucks. I saw this one pipe framed rig running 44" mudders. Ugliest thing I ever saw. It had 2 seats (driver passenger) that sat up front almost like an old VW van sort of thing, with the motor in the rear. Had the biggest winch I had ever seen up front, and tow-truck setup on the back. He charged $200 per extraction!

 

I agree with quad_man. I think the Polaris Sportsman 6x6 or even the ranger would be the best thing to start off with. Her are some mods it would need:

2 Rule 3300lb winches with 100 feet of cable on each
4 10,000 lb. ****** blocks
2 20,000 lb. tow straps
25", or what ever fits, Vampires on renforced aluminum wheels all the way around
Transmission hoses extended
Highlifter lift kit(not made yet)

I agree with the 6x6 idea, but was wondering if you needed to pull quads out or haul them out.

 

Riding w/dbeck one time and saw a Polaris 6X6 with a boom attached to the back. Looked like a mini-tow truck.Real cool

 

Probably be pulling them and towing out as well...thanks fellas for all the good ideas the polaris 6x6 is sounding pretty good would like to go with a cut down toyota but just couldn't take it on some of the slim trails around here am thinking on putting in a wrecker service for the Hatfield McCoy trail as it will probably be booming by spring...
