I've heard of this, does it really work?

I've heard that you can run a rope from a tree, tie it around your rear axel, put your ATV in reverse and use the axel like a winch spool to pull yourself out.

Has anyone ever tried this? Did it work?

I don't think it can be done on your quad unless it has an rotating part of the axle exposed like the 2000 Kodiak and the Honda 300.

if you could hook it to the wheel it will do it it will travel up the rope freeing it's self.I've used it to free my tractor from the mud many times.

About 2 weeks ago I took a friend of mine on a trail I'm working on behind my house. We were doubled up which is the way I ride with my wife when I get a new part done. It's a creek bed that runs through and is wet year round. Soupy black, been there for many years mud. I have went through many times doubled and by myself. We start throughit and stop........bottomed out. Rocking and what not didn't helped a bit Tires just spining in the mud with nothing to grab to !! So here we go tromping back to the house to get a ratchet strap and tow strap to get out. It didn't take to much to get it out but man at the crap I took for getting stuck.

Andy great story. I, like you, wouldn't have spent the big bucks for the winch. When I bought my 99 Big Bear the winch was $69. What a deal! All my friends love it. I have pulled more of them out of trouble than I care to count. It has been just over a year since I got my Bear and I have not needed the winch yet. Although having it does give one the condifence to do things you would not do if not for it. Plus it provides a good bit of weight up front when making steep climbs.
Now before everyone starts in on me. Yes I have been stuck, just not on the Bear (at least not yet)! Maybe later I will tell my story of being lost at night in the mountians of east Tennessee! Later when I have more time and courage like Andy.
