Purchasing a trailer
#1
As a new ATV owner, I am faced with some decisions in purchasing a trailer. Galvanized vs. aluminum, utility vs. ATV specific or enclosed? I also anticipate purchasing a 2nd quad and need advice as to size, loading techniques, brands and cost. The Honda dealer has recommended a 101" x 10 foot snowmobile trailer in anticipation of 2 quads. This trailer would be hauled with a Mercury Villager minivan that is factory equipped with a hitch and heavy-duty radiator.

If you are going to get a 2nd quad you will need a min size of 6x8. You can get 2 quads on turning them sideways. Or, if you want to put them in a row, you will need a 5 or 6x 12. These are all flat beds. The one that the dealer has sounds like it might be the wrong size for quads. He might have it in stock and wants to find some sucker to unload it on. Some dealers will do this. Look around; papers, trailer dealers, etc and you might find a better deal.

I went with 6.5 x 12 ft. flat trailer. You can load two atvs end to end that way, or you can put three on sideways. My trailer is steel, and has loading ramps built in. Its a little heavy at 1000lbs. other then that I'm glad I went with that size. As for price it was 825$

Dear t1602: Thanks 4 the advice. My 2 quads measure 160 inches as the dealer suggested 14 ft long. Any advice galvanized vs aluminum utility vs quad specific units vs snowmobile trailers as this is what my dealer suggest for 2 quad transport.Let me know where you bought yours as that sounds like a great deal and Altoona trip ok Thanks again

I think your biggest concern should be weight. Not sure what your minivan is rated at, but probably at 2000lbs gross weight. I would look at some of the aluminum trailers from titan. A guy in the Polaris forum named 69 Cobra bought one from his Polaris dealer. He gets two quads on it and I believe the trailer weighs less than 500 lbs. I beleive the trailer was around $1,500 new. Snowmobile trailers also tend to be a lot lighter than standard utility trailers, but again you pay extra for the aluminum frames over what a comparable steel utility trailer would costs. I would pick up the phone book and start calling all of the local trailer and atv dealers in the area and see what they have available. Prices vary greatly from place to place.

I just bought two Sportsman HO's with a trailer. The trailer is Aluminum with a treated plywood floor and weighs a bit under 400 lbs. With the two ATV's, the total weight is well under 2000 lbs. The trailers is ~ 7' wide by 10' long (floor only). I particularly like that it has a built in ramp on each side. This gives me versatility as well as security, as I can load and unload from either side and lock it all up when I want. It has about a 1 ft railing on the front and back and is well constructed throughout. Just to make it a little more versatile, I can take off the front and rear railing for optional loading methods, but it doesn't have a tilt bed. Bear in mind that if you get a rear loading trailer, you will have to almost pull both ATV's onto it at once, as if you try to do one at a time, you won't be able to tilt the bed for the second one. I guess you could always cart a couple ramps with you, but why bother with the options out there. Anyway, that is my 2 cents... if you want the make and model of the trailer, feel free to email.

Weight might be a problem, like Mag.MudMan said. Check your car owners manual to see what you can tow. If you are still interrested they are manufactured in Claysburg PA. I will try to get you a phone number. They may have a dealer closer to you.
