Default The New 450cc V Twin (dirt bike) hits the market

Just received my new Cycle World and they test rode the Aprilia 450 V-twin dirt bike. Some may remember the splash made by the announcement of this engine about 18 to 24 months ago.

They actually had 2 versions, one at 450cc which produces 60 horsepower, one at 550 which produces 70 horsepower. The engine is very compact. The riders say it is almost too responsive, hard to carry a wheelie with hair trigger throttle response and fast compression-down at any throttle chop.

I just glanced through the article at lunch and will post more as I have time to read through it. What a monster quad motor that would make!! Lightweight and torquey and big top end power. Sign me up! Where are the big 3 quad manufacturers on this one???????

It actually takes up nearly the same physical dimensions the DS 650 motor takes up. Highly doubtful it will make it into a production quad chassis as it's just too peaky to be useable. It would be a fun hill-shooter but if a quad company were to make one, it would be too hard to handle against other 450's, espically in MX.

THE 45.V2 ENGINE IN A NUTSHELL
Displacement: 450 cc.
Type: 77° V-twin
Timing system: single overhead shaft controlled by a silent chain; four titanium valves per cylinder
Maximum revs: 14,000 rpm
Starter: electric
Gearbox: front clutch, with 4 / 5 gears
Clutch: multiple disc wet clutch with hydraulic control (or mechanical on request).
Powerful compact the “Terre Rare” alternator provides sufficient power for the injection system, electric starter, battery charger and auxiliary circuits
Lubrication: separate dual circuit. The engine oil is separate from the drive oil. The pressurized oil circuit consists of a paper cartridge filter, an oil tank and a check valve
Forced liquid cooling with centrifugal pump. Aprilia is forward-looking, and the 45.V2 engine has an eye to the future, even as regards regulations. With a smaller unitary displacement, it is easier to meet the sound-level limits expected for the future, and with total electronic engine management, emissions are improved, which has also become an important factor for off-road and racing bikes.

Yeah, about 2 years ago I remember seeing a picture of Aprilia's CEO with his arms around the 450-V twin.
