Help with decision on boots please!
#12
Hello all...I know I'm drudging up an old thread, but need some advice. Recently I broke my Navicular bone in my left foot (its the primary bone that connects all of the tendons and is also the main weight bearing bone). Luckily it wasn't from an ATV accident, but something stupid that I was doing around the house. Well, after having pins put in. The Doctor is saying that this foot my always cause me some problems and may be weaker in the future. BTW, I'm still in a cast for another 4-6 wks. I was wondering what everyone's opinions are about ATV riding boots. I found a pair of Fox Comp 5 Off Road boots for $149 and was wondering if they are worth the pennies for the type of riding that I do. I ride a Brute Force and mostly trail ride with variable speed. Sometimes fast and sometimes at a responsible speed.
Thanks for your tips and comments....

A lot of people will bash Fox because their clothing is popular now, they say it is crap products. I love my Fox boots, they are very comfortable. I get back to camp from a ride and will keep my boots on all day with no discomfort. The buckles have lasted me 3 years but if they do break, they are replaceable.
They are a bit stiff at first, once you break them in they are great.

IMO boots are good for any type of riding........ They are nice in mud because you don't have to deal with wet, muddy laces..... Just just pop the buckles and you are done. Plus they are very comfy once broken in, and if you treat them with bees wax or some silicone they will keep out water pretty well in the deep stuff. Not as great as a Gortex boot but still good enough.
And the extra safety you get wearing a boot at the very least is good peace of mind. Even if you don't "need" them, it cannot hurt to have them. You don't need to spend $500 or even $200 dollars either. I have a pair of Fly boots that were $80 and they are great. My MSR boots were only $130, I got my Wife's Thor boots for $99 on sale. I've seen guys break ankles in $400 boots from Alpinestars so I don't know that spending more is always better when it comes to boots. I think the modern designs and materials allow for all the brands to offer a relatively cheap and safe boot. Certainly the more expensive boots might last longer and be lighter, but I think any boot is pretty safe.
So they are not overkill at all. A good pair of work boots are going to cost you $100, and you will ruin them riding in no time. But a $100 pair of riding boots will save your work boots for what they were designed for. And as I said, just the fact that you don't have to deal with muddy laces is nice. And generally they are easier to get on/off then work boots too because of the buckle system.

Agreed, I don't see any overkill when it comes to safety. Wearing the same boots on my dirt bike I have put my toes into a rock at about 20mph with nothing more than a scuffed boot. Every boot mfg has an entry level boot that will run you about 100-140.
