LOL, not me.

We started investing for our kids right when they were born. First stock we purchased for him back in 1987 was Exxon. Which is now ExxonMobil and in my opinion is cheap at todays price of around 35.00 dollars a share with a 2.60 dividend. We have added to it every year and all dividends have been reinvested. Right now he has a higher net worth than most adults. Medical school will eat that up quick though but in the long run it will be well worth it.

Raptory-What were the highs and lows for ExonMobil for 2002? Do you know what price it would split? Do you put the stock in his name and your name? Have you looked into the programs where you pay current school fee's for your child to go later?

The last 2 splits have occured on 04/14/97 and 07/19/01. I really don't like splits because your really just cutting the pie up. The same amount is still there. They do this so 100 shares is more in reach. The 52 week high and low has been 29.75 to 41.13. If it was me starting off with a time period of 10 or more years I would go direct through the company and you wouldn't have to deal with a stock broker and no commissions as of now.

I started investing before these prepaid college programs come of age.

I wouldn't because when they turn 18 years of age they can do as they please. New car might look better at that time than education

Do they have a phone number or site where you can get the paper work to buy directly? I've bought directly through P&G and they had a 1-800 number to ask for the paper work.

I've been saving for our children and want to invest a portion of it. I picture saving for their education and then they'll want to spend it on a future boyfriend or girlfriend.

There is the reason you shouldn't have it in there name. If its in your name your can always write the check to the college or give it to them as a gift in future years for home purchase, etc. etc. Also since it will be long term gains you will only be taxed at the 20% rate on profit as of now.

I will get back to you on information

Go to exxonmobil.com and then hit Investor information. On that page over to the left you will see the link
shareholder investment program. They have an 1-800 that you can call or you can print out the information on that page. You can start out with $250.00

The last time I made a big purchase of what was called Exxon then was the day of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. My thinking at that time was to crisis invest. I have never sold the stock and all dividends have been reinvested and I am in the above mentioned program.

Oh and P&G, I turned quite a few people on to there program back in the eighties including my own parents. I am not sure what it is now but back then you could get started investing in P&G for only $10.00 dollars. If you have held on to your P&G stock through thick and thin you have been rewarded and I can't believe what my shares are worth now. 10 years ago P&G was 24.56 and today it is 90.00.

Thats a much better return than the bank

Chet,

Do you put it in just your name or as the "custodian" with your child's name as well?

I am a custodian on my daughter's AmSouth. My experience has been that the companies won't allow a minor to be on there without a custodian. After 18, I had to jump through a million hoops to get all my stocks in my name alone.
