If you take the muffler off and run it out of the header, yes kiss your valves good by... You need some back pressure for the engine to run correctly and safely...

You can safely run your quad without having a muff on it. You won't wreck anything. The only problem MIGHT be if you get the pipe too short you can suck cold air on reversion and that is not good for the exhaust valve. But I'm talking REAL short pipe here. I can only assume that you are going to just take the muff off and leave the head pipe on. If so, you will be fine.

that is not an old wives tale. if you dont re-jet, ur burn will get realy hot, and that is what warps your valves.

I dont recommend taking off the muffler. removing the muffler will help power in midrange, but it will not improve bottom end by much. not enough back pressure. another risk of removing the muffler is burning the exhaust valve up. the entire exhaust system acts as a heat conducter. by removing the muffler you are shotening it so that alot of heat is trapped in the exhaust tract this will burn the exhaust valve it doesnt allways happen. if you still want it loud and get the power in the midrange remove your mufflers internal components and then bolt it back on at least this way you still have it as a heat conducter.
