400EX High Comp Piston & Big Cam Help
#1
I am preparing to undertake a performance mod. of my 00 EX. I intend to use a Weisco 11:1 compression piston in combination with a Web cam (the full race .378 lift cam). Web cam tells me that it'll require hardfaced rockers and shortened guides. They also mention the need to do a "full valve job" after installing the guides. Can anyone explain what this entails? Web tells me that I'll have ample valve-to-piston clearance...is this true? Has anyone undertaken a similar mod. that can offer advice?

i have a big bore kit in my '00 ex,ims piston, white bros cam, dynojet DJ155 and white bros says to use stock valve springs etc.replacment of followers etc.I really don't know much as i am not a mechanic and don't service my own machine but do have all the spec sheets on the work that has been done.pipe ported polished it screams and i hope your project works out for you. I believe WebCam calls out the entire Valve Spring kit for use with that cam. The kit includes the shortened guides. Here's the deal...The amount of lift that this cam generates requires you to run different springs which can be colapsed farther. They will probably have greater spacing between the coils than your stock springs. The shortened valve guides are needed for the same reason. The valve guides stick up out of the head casting slightly, and they need to be shorter since your valve retainer will be coming down farther.
They suggest having your cam followers (or rocker arms) hard-faced due to the higher pressure which will be placed on them. This higher pressure is due to the stronger valve springs.
As far as the complete valve job goes...since you are replacing the valve guides, the valves will be out, so there is no reason not to clean up the valve seats while it is apart.
Hope this helps.

I would drop back to a 450-451 grind. There is no need to replace springs or guides with this cam. the hard faced rockers would be a good thing.
