Thumb vs Twist Throttle
#1
What do you think would be better? I ride trails mostly (just about every week in sping, summer, fall), sometimes the trails are rough, I jump, pound woops anyway after a while your hands start to hurt, so would it be better if I got a twist throttle, or should I just get me some better grips?

You'll get answers going both ways, but i'd suggest sticking with the thumb throttle for trails. The twist is fun in fields and places where you don't do a lot of tight turns, but I never had any luck maintaining a steady speed while turning with them, or when the trail gets rough and bouncy. I was riding the neighbor's 440ex and went on a couple wild rides when I accidentally cracked the throttle wide open through a tight turn, and went wheeying off the trail into a tree once.

Yea true, that has happened to me on my friends KFX one time I was just wondering cuz the dam thumb throttle makes my hand hurt but oh well. Thinkin I'm gonna stick w/ the thumb.

A short while after I got my 250R I decided I needed a twist throttle, because my thumb got tirred after awhile. At first I kinda like it but then realized it was crap. It needed to be twisted too much to go from trail speed to WFO without grabbing the twist in a different position or having my wrist in a funky position. I also had an issue with rough terrain. I would try and wheelie over some ruts and end up getting kicked back on the seat, which is not and issue with a normal thumb throttle but with a twist it causes you to keep the throttle WFO and I ended up running into a tree....I didn't enjoy it. I personally would never run another twist on an atv.

SFA, sounds like you'd have been pretty happy with it if you would have purchased the right ratio. They dont all turn at the same rate, you needed to find what works best for you and your carbs/machine.
I have a thumb for flattrack, slow twist for trails, 1/4 twist for dunes.

I really don't know what the ratio was, I just know I didn't like it and wouldn't want another no matter what the ratio. Seems like it would be touchy if it was too short of a twist anyway, I just don't like them.

It's a hard call. I personaly like to trail with a thumb throttle, But on my flat drag machine its all twist. Some have to use a twist when they upgrade in carb size to fully open the carbs. =] just my .02¢

It seems like every time I have ridden a quad or a dirt bike with a twist throttle I have almost killed my self. But that was just from my lack of experience with a twist, If you have always had a twist throttle and are used to it thats fine but getting used to one is another story. I would just stick with the thumb if I were you.
