advancing timming and loosing topend???

Yes, too much timing will hurt top end. Notice though I said TOO MUCH. The right amount will help you across the band. To much advancement will put the spark at a time when the top revs will not receive any combustion. I have seen bikes not rev past about 3000 and I,ve seen a few actually go in revearse because the spark was so late, it pushed the piston the wrong way(forced it down on the up stroke). RRetarding the timing is very helpful fr really high revs, but you basically loose a ton down low.
