kick starter for a 400ex

I'm making a mistake to go against Pam, but...
Rumor is, a company in SoCal sells an electric start kit for the XR400 using EX left and right sidcovers. Runs in the $1000 range. If the EX sidecases will bolt onto the XR motor than the XR sidecovers should bolt onto an EX motor, correct? In theory all you need is the right XR cover (block off starter motor on the left) kickstarter parts ans someone who knows what they are doing to drill your case. Don't forget you need clearance for the starter, another big challenge. It seems like a lot of trouble and cash for very little gain.
If you try to take it on, best of luck.

This is what I get for trying to leave a short answer! :-)
Okay, here's the scoop -- for an ATV, you want the thing to kick which way? Forward.
The XR and TRX, being a big bore single (unlike the Banshee & blaster, which do kick rearward but use a little bitty kickstater), requires a long kickstarter. Look at the kicker on the XR400.
Okay, now, we've gotta do 2 things:
1. Install a kicker which will work with the plastic (unless you want to get really weird)
2. Install a kicker which is long enough to actually start the thing.
So, just switching parts wouldn't achieve those two goals. You could modify the goals (install flip-top rear plastic to accomodate the rearward kick), or modify the parts to achieve those goals. Thus my abbreviated answer.
Okay, now on to the electric start conversion for the XR -- Yes, you can go that way with the XR, since there's no problem with kicker clearance. Sometimes it's easier to go forward (installing an extra) rather than back (removing and extra)!
Hope this made my answer a little more clear. Sorry 'bout the confusion!
