Warrior idle help needed!
#1
My 87 Warrior has been sitting for a few years and recently I have found some time to put into getting it up and running again. After changing the oil, changing the plug, cleaning out the gas tank, slapping on a K&N, thoroughly soaking and scrubbing the carb, I got it started. BUT it immediately revs through the roof! I kill it b/c revving that high cannot be good for any motor, especially one that's been sitting.
I tried messing with the idle screw, but it didn't seem to change anything. The carb seems to be clean and everything's moving freely and not sticking. The throttle response seems good too and springs back quickly when jabbed.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Are you sure you got all the part back into the carb correctly, or didn't forget anything?
The three things I would have suggested, you seem to have checked already.
1)Throttle cable hanging up, not closing all the way.
2)Idle screw knocked out of whack.
3)Everything in the carb moving freely.
The only other thing I can think of that would cause that would be an extremely lean condition.
I assume it ran ok before it was shut down?

I didn't tear it down completely. Just pulled the bowl, the side plastic cover, removed the throttle linkage and the other cover on the top of the carb. Dropped the whole thing in some carb/parts cleaner and rotated and swished it around in there for about an hour.
Weird though because it did the same thing when I tried starting it after it had been sitting. I hadn't touched the carb yet either. I did however put a new K&N filter on it. Could more air cause the high idle? I doubt it...

Well, the K&N will make it a little leaner, but I don't think it would be enough to cause what you are talking about at an idle.
I suppose you could put the old filter back on and see what happens just for fun.
And you say everything in the carb is freely moving?? Still sounds like there is something binding up, or out of adjustment on the carb or possibly the throttle cable.
Hmmmmmmmmmm..............

I agree. I'll try the old filter just to see. I also did loosen all of the throttle cable adjustments in case it was too tight but no change... Maybe I'll bite the bullet and have the local shop check it out.
Thanks!
