Default 96 sportsman 400 trans stuck in reverse

Hi, I am new to the forum and working on my sportsman 400, it has been sitting up for a couple years. After cleaning carb and new bat. it will start up, but is stuck in reverse, after reading some of the other posts i disconnected the linkages at tranny and you can shift H-N-R with the tabs but it doesn,t actually shift, it is still in reverse. Low doesnt want to engage, probably because tranny is in reverse. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! Are belcranks (shift arms) on the transmission tight, not stripped? With vice grips can you move both levers to where they are straight out on the transmission? Try rocking atv back and forth while trying to get in neutral. IF you can get it in neutral, remove the linkage arms from the shift box and have the shifter in neutral. Hook the linkages up first at the trans and adjust the front linkage joints to where they drop straight in the shift levers on the shift box with no resistance. Hope this helps you a little. Keep us updated OPT

Thanks for the reply, no the bellcranks are not stripped, you can feel the detents as you shift with vise-grips, there is not as significant a neutral detent as F and R , however regardless of the position of the bellcranks the tranny is still in reverse.I have a polaris manual and it looks like a booger to remove tear down and reinstall. I rode the bike into the shop, However it has been pushed around some.

The good part is that you have a manual! The hardest part is just to get the trans out of the frame! If you do have to tear it down be sure to replace ALL the circlips on the gear shafts that you remove even if they look good and always replace the internal chain!!Could be the chain may be the problem?Keep us updated!
