Default 2007 90 sportsman clutch removal

I have a starting problem the stater will not crank the enigne can kick start it . I read some posts that said to check the overunning clutch that apears to be the fault it i will not freewheel in one direction . What i need is a hand with is how do you remove the primary clutch to access the overrunning clutch there is a nut on the end of the shaft but i do not know if it is a reverse thread and also have tried to hold the clutch housing and turn in both directions but it is not coming off easy . thanks in advance

The clutch nut is not reverse threads. Really helps if you have an impact wrench to remove and replace the nut as you must center the outer sheath properly when you retighten. It's usually the idle gear that engages the starter gear that has teeth worn down or just gets dirty and wont engage. Look at the parts break down on "kick start" and " kick start 2" on your model.Browse Hope this helps. OPT

I took off the idler gear all teeth are okay and the bearing it sits on is okay but the main starter gear should be a one way gear if i understand this correct it will not release in the backward motion it is really hard to turn the engine with the gear but it will turn easy by hand from kick start hub .

Then you may have to take the kick starter wheel and starter gear apart to see if it's binding or worn or just plain dirty. Plus with the idle gear off the starter should spin over fast with no load on it. If it doesn't may be the starter itself needs replacement. OPT
