Welcome to the forum! Pull the front plastic panel and close to the radiator is the regulator/rectifier. Check that all wires are connected. Should be a red,yellow,yellow/red,green and brown wire. Have had a problem with some on wires disconnecting from vibration. If the connections are good, then most of the time it's a burnt out reg/rectifier if there is only12 volts at the battery (should be around 14 volts)Check that battery ground and red wires are tight, another reason it could be not charging. Plus how old is the battery?? It may need to be replaced or checked out at any auto store on a load tester. May or may not have anything to do with the backfiring, but check the wires out first. Make sure the throttle has only 1/8" slack at the thumb lever. Excess slack can cause back firing. OPT

Does it run better with the lights off? If not, your problem is most likely not your charging system. If it does, get a volt ohm meter and check the voltage going in (AC volts) and out of the regulator (DC volts).

If you have 12 volts on the red wire going into the regulator /rectifier and shows only battery voltage at the battery while running, then order a new regulator /rectifier. This is what happens 90% of the time. #4060173 try this place, cheaper than some I've found. Polaris ATV Rectifier Regulator OPT

Usually charged 14 volts (or there abouts) when I changed a bad regulator rectifier out! Which sounds like what you have! OPT

Is this the replacement for this regulator or just one that came off of another Polaris? If its the replacement regulator then it doesn't matter which yellow goes to the yellow or yellow/red if the replacement only has yellow wires. If this is what you're talking about? Have found this before on replacement modules. OPT
