Default 2002 700, I lost low gear

Yesterday while out riding, I tried pulling a buddy of mine out of a hole. As the 700 was pulling I heard a pop, and it just stopped moving. I have High Gear, and Reverse just no Low Gear. Any ideas or starting points? All help will be appreciated

Check that the belcrank on the gear case and linkage is tight. If so then check that the lock out spring is still attached to the brake pedal and gear case. If it's attached and moving the lock out out pin then could be the detent pawl or lock out disc inside the right gear case cover could be the problem. This area receives a lot of wear, not just the internal gears. BEST to get a manual before you tear into this gear case as there are marks on gears that have to be timed up.Plus this gear case has wide shift forks that grab two gears separated by wave springs that can wear and cause the popping out of gear. Not hard to pull the gear case after you pull everything out of the way,but this gear case is complex to be a small gear case since the shift mechanism is partially on the outside under the right cover and the shift drum stem is poking through that turns from the gears in this area. Plus always replace the circlips, "wave springs" for the shift forks, etc if you completely split the gear case. OPT
