350 polaris what is different about starters heavy duty verses regular
#1
the last issue I have. with my complete rebuild of a 1991 350 polaris I rebuilt for my grandson. I bought a $63 dollar starter and bendix from ebay, brand new mind you. I started the bike 6 times and now the starter spins, but the bendix won't jump out and turn the flywheel. I will say the starter sounds a bit slow? could be just me. so I emailed several suppliers of the starters and most say the only difference is the warranty on them, but if any of you have ever had to change the starter on this bike. you would no that it is a huge process, in fact dealer wants $350 to install a new starter. so my questions is I see starter's that are $165 to almost $200 like moose brand. what is the difference about their starters. their isn't much to a starter and it almost looks like everyone is useing the same parts only different names, and warranties ? I don't want to have to do this again. so any help on this issue would be great. I more thing yes my battery is fully charged and putting plenty of juice. thanks

You can get a bad starter or bendix,it's not entirely uncommon. I've found that some cheap aftermarket no name ones instead of the oem Mitsubsa starters don't hold up.We sold some for a while because they were cheap, but quit buying them at the shop when reports that they didn't hold up started coming in. You can call these guys and see if they can help. They show to have heavier duty starters offered on some models. DB Electrical - Polaris

actually I did contact them already. they say their starters have better brushes and higher torqueing motor or windings not sure what it was exactly. but they say it is different than just plain cheap ones. which they also sell. so really what it comes to. is if it is better their really isn't anything that will tell you it is. even if you take it a part and look at the windings and brushes on it. I'm going to go with that starter because they say it is better and they gavce me a reason why all the others haven't responded or truthfully don't have any idea. so thats better than what I have been learning so far. thanks for the help
