Backlight on display problem
#1
OK this is the deal. The other night I was riding with my stero and leds going. The red light on the display starting flashing and it showed the engine with the 1 light and also the battery. Well then one of my headlights went out. I stopped and put the bike in park to rev the engine up. Well the battery light went off and the red light came back on. As I rode more the check engine light stayed on and the red light for the display was off again. Next morning I did the code check and it said that the idle was to high, dont know how to fix that. The red light was on and looked ok. Well then I gave it some gas and the light went off again. It was idleing between 1180-1200 like normal and when the fan kicked on it sounded like the bike was about to die but the red backlight came back on. Each time i reved the engine the light would go back off until the rpms got back to idle level. Anyone know what could be wrong?
The bike is a 2010 850xp.

Check that the battery connections are tight and when running at idle you should be charging 14-14.5 volts at the battery. If not check the regulator/rectifier leads to make sure all the connections are good. Possible reg/rectifier problem in most cases, but can also be stator related. To eliminate the stator as the problem, remove the 3 yellow wires going from the stator into the regulator/rectifier. Resistance between Yellow wire 1 to Yellow 2,Yellow 1 to Yellow 3,and Yellow 2 to Yellow 3 should all be around 0.19 ohms resistance. Also all yellow wires to ground should be open ,NO shorts to ground. Also you can do a AC voltage test. Wit the yellow wires removed, meter set to AC voltage, check that Yellow 1 to Y2,Yellow1 to yellow3,and yellow 2 to yellow 3 should read(at idle) 115- 171 VAC (+ or - 10%) If the stator checks out, replace the regulator/rectifier. Look here on your model under "electrical,sensors".http://parts.polarisind.com/Browse/Browse.asp

STATOR test,not starter!
IF charging is good back to the battery, then you may want to have the battery load tested(could be a dead cell, not allowing battery to hold a charge?) Plus also could be the pesky t map or tps sensor harness wiring short or internal wiring breakage causing the problem. On efi systems there can be several things to check out. OPT

If you have a simple voltmeter you can check if its a charging problem or not,but if you want a dealer to hook it up to Polaris Digital Wrench they can usually spot the problem, but sometimes if it's a short unless it throws a code they may have to dig around for the problem. This is up to you on this. Also codes thrown by the ecu are not always 100% accurate. It could be something else causing the problem? It might be best to let Digital Wrench sort it out. If you do take it in post the results in case others may experience the same problems and know what to do.This is the main reason the forum is here. OPT
