rust on crank?

i have the top end off the bike right now and i have a little bit of rust on the crank how do i get that off? scotch brite pad? sand paper? what about the dust getting into the crank? is it ok? or a big no-no?

Rust on the crank is because of either moisture in the fuel over time or if the top end has been off awhile. You can use emory cloth, scotch brite, etc but hard to keep some of the crap from getting back into the case. If you have some kerosene you can flush the crank case,( when full, pull the case drain plug)then pour a little two stroke oil over the rod and the small holes in the case that lead to the crank bearings. Make sure there is no up and down play on the rod, side to side play is ok. On an older machine you're still taking a chance just on a top end job without replacing with a new rod kit and crank bearings. After having one come back on me for this,I wouldn't guarantee just doing a top end for customers when I was at the shop. Just my

The Fuji motors are dry sumps not wet sumps like most 4 stroke motors,so the crank is not sitting in a bath of oil. Most of the oil is in the oil tank not the crankcase like other machines.
I guess if it was sitting for long periods it could get some rust.

it had nasty nasty *** gas. will kerosene work to flush out the crank case?? or is gas a better idea? and the push rod is fine no play at all, it just has rust on the crank and i was wondering how to get it off. and i get my crank turned enough

Kerosene will dissolve grease and grime better than gasoline. We even started using it in our parts cleaner at work. It's easier on rubber parts and crank seals. Just fill the crank case, spin the rod around, drain the kerosene and use two stroke oil to coat the lower rod and bearings. OPT
