engine braking

Actually the way it's supposed to work, but not supposed to be a hard breaking action.A lot of times when this happens it's either because of a worn fiber and metal washer on either side of the one way bearing, the one way bearing itself is worn or needs to be cleaned/greased. Plus binding up on the one way can cause it throw you forward when letting up on the throttle.Sometimes just a simple blowing out of accumulated belt dust from the clutches can help. Just be in an open area when you do it.
Several posts along with pics on the one way and washer replacements.Look at these recent ones and hopefully may help. http://forums.atvconnection.com/pola...alignment.html

Starting in 2008 the non efi 500s had the non ebs clutch set up. Efi machines had the ebs systems. Shows this way up until the last 2013 model 500s. My two cents on this was cutting cost on entry models, plus kinda of a Back to the Future sort of thing. The first 500 didn't have ebs and I really didn't think a 4 stroke needed one in the first place because of the natural engine breaking effect they have. But again I wasn't the one that had to ride these things down mountains either.
