I searched the manual and didn't find mention of oil in the timing cover. That is why I asked. It's his 4 wheeler. I have no idea where he got that info. I found mention of 3.2 ozs of lube in a counter balance or a front gear case. The 250 has neither. Maybe that is what he saw, or whoever sold him the oil told him. So, I'm going to clean the crap out of the starters.

This explains how the old starter lasted long enough to wear out a bendix, and a new one didn't last but about 20 attempts to start it.

Put the old one back on, and it worked about 10 times.

When they stop its as though the brushes are bad, and I know they have plenty of brush left. It's the first I 've ever heard of oil in a starter. What threw me was the starters looks like it has o-ring seals between housing junctions, front housing to center to back, where the brushes are. So it looked feasible. I didn't figure that he didn't know, I assumed he got it from a user manual. Otherwise, why would he say, "oh, it's supposed to have 3 ozs of 10w40 in there". He seemed so adamant. Well, you know about assuming.

Crap I have to pull the flywheel again.

You know, I'm from MO, I should have made him show me.

The 3.2 ounces of oil is for the 350 or 400 counter balancer cavity. Also these older machines can get oil in the recoil when crank seals leak and can get into starters. If a starter ever goes out, cheaper just to replace them rather than go through the trouble of tearing one apart.
