Default 2000 xplorer and predator 90

I just found 2 good deals on clist. ended up buying a 2000 polaris xplorer 400 4x4 ,and have the chance to buy a predator 90. I got the explorer for 500bucks currently not running but all there in good shape. Guy said motor was rebuilt but coolant was entering plug hole. Sound like head gasket to me. Easy. The other one is a pred 90 not running for 200bucks seems to be in pretty good shape just not running. Why unkown. My question is what are the usual main things that go wrong on these machines,to maybe check to get running. Good deals? I have two sportsman 500's just wanted to dip into something different for a change.

The 400 may be an "easy" fix or could end up being a money pit. A lot of parts in the 400 engine as the water pump runs off the counter balancer as well as the oil pump.Look at the engine parts breakdown. IMHO I'd stick to 4 strokes. They were good in their day,but those days have passed. Didn't shed a tear when the last 400 was discontinued after 2003.

Did the 1999 xplorer 400 2stroke have electric start as well. I bought one but have not seen it yet the guy delivered it to my brothers in maine. My brother says he cant find a way to start with either key or button. Pull start worked. I wont know till i pick it up just wondering.

Yes it has a starter. Located on the bottom of the engine and a little tough to replace if bad. Really need to pull the clutches and backing plate to get to the mounting bracket, plus have to remove the recoil as there are two starter bolts inside also. Pull the bendix out with the starter. Best to replace it too if you replace the starter.

Ok thanks for some reason my brother cant figure out how to start it besides using the recoil. I asume its with the key i dont beleive there is a starter button on it.

Hard to remember all the machines, but on a couple year models you had to push up on the on/off slide switch to engage the starter. 4010262 is the part # for the 99 and 2000 Explorer. Does show on this one to push UP on the switch to start while it's in the center position.. Polaris 99 01 ATV 325 400 500 Handlebar Switch Push Up to Start 4010262 New | eBay

You were right the slide switch for on off did push up on this model. It did spin the starter but no go on the bendix catching flywheel. Must have a bad spring

Some of the Scrambler models had this same method for push button starting. Put the switch in start position and push up on it to start.
