2003 Ranger Died-Help Needed
#1
I have a 2003 2x4 Ranger that just turned 800 hours of trouble free use. Today my engine quit while out in the Boondocks and I had to get towed home. I am pretty sure it's the fuel pump, but I need second opinions and answers to a few questions.
1. Is the power to the pump always hot when the key is turned on?
2. Is there a pressure regulator in the pump that turns it on & off?
3. Is there a breaker for the fuel pump? Location?
Thanks in advance!

I don`t know if they are the same or not, but here`s what I`d recommend. I`m making these comments based on my 2006/07 6x6efi 700cc. When I turn the key on, the fuel pump in the tank pressurizes the fuel system/injectors and then kicks off after reaching a predetermined pressure. in this system there are 2 fuel filters. 1 in the tank and 1 down stream from the tank before the injectors. This system is controlled by both a power control module and an ECU or engine control unit. I don`t think your machine has this sophistication and I can`t imagine the fuel pump just quiting suddenly. I would check for a plugged fuel filter or a blown fuse in the power sup[ply to the pump. I believe you should be able to check the pump power circuit using a volt meter to determine if you are getting voltage to the pump. If you find no voltage you might try taking a fused hot lead from the battery to the positive connection on the pump to see if it will work. I wouldn`t disconnect any fuel lines while trying this as a spark could cause disasterous results. Incidently, you can check the power circuit by simply disconnecting the hot lead to the pump and checking for voltage, using a volt meter, when you cycle the ignition switch. if it sounds like the pump is working, given that it is an electric pump, then you`ll know your problem lies elsewhere.

arkieshooter...thanks for the suggestions. I got my Ranger running yesterday and here is what I found out. First of all, a new fuel pump at the dealer costs between $140.00-160.00. My problem was a clogged fuel screen in the fuel tank. The fuel filter and fuel pump both were OK. My Ranger will be 5 years old next month, with 816 hours on the engine. I use it mainly on very dusty trails. I am very through in regard to maintaining it per the Owners Manual. When I looked in the fuel tank with a bright flashlight I was shocked to see the bottom covered in dirt...large and small clumps of dirt, dirt everywhere! The screen on the end of the fuel pick-up was also covered in dirt. After cleaning the fuel tank, the fuel screen, and installing a new fuel filter, my Ranger is once again running OK. The only thing I can figure out is that dust was sucked into the tank via the fuel tank vent tube and it finally plugged up the screen. Needless to say, I will keep an eye on it from now on.

Lone Ranger... glad to hear oyu got it fixed... I was going to say if you ever need a fuel pump for a carbureted atv, a cheaper alternative is a 12v low pressure low volume pump for a riding lawn mower. I've used them before with great sucess, the ones I've installed are also sealed up very well.
