wet belt on scam 500 2x4 2001
I have replace the belt cooling intake to the 2002 style and installed the 700 belt. I've heard guys say that this fixed their wet belt problems. But I still have problems when I hit water holes at speed. I have no problems when crossing water at slow speeds. Is there something else I need to do to stop this problem. thanks for any help

Honestly, it's from going to fast into the water. No matter what clutch exhaust outlet you have, water will find it's way in there somehow. Try going slower (safer), that should make a world of difference. Whatever you do don't cover the outlet with anything (nylon or prefilter) because you will slow the exhaust flow from the clutch cover and will have problems.

I pretty much knew that going through that water at high speeds was the problem. So what I need to do is ... when riding down a trail at 40 mph and I come up to a water hole is SLOW down, cross at a slow speed. My buddies will be waiting for me all day long. I was really hoping that someone else had similar problems and was able to come up with some type of fix. This is becoming such a problem I thinking about selling. Thanks for the info though.

Bout the only other thing to do is reroute the clutch intake to put it somewhere that the splashing water will not get to it as much. Had that problem with my Xplorer and just did the slow down thing. But I am getting older too. I had heard also about people putting a nylon over the intake and saying it worked. But others say not to. Guess it would be up to you to try.

Don't give up! There is an easy fix for this anoying little polaris prob. All you have to do is buy yourself about 8' of flex hose. (the kind with the spiral wire built in like air duct material) You can use rubber flex hose if you want but it gets stiff over time and exposure. I think the diameter is about 2" or 2.5" id. Remove your stock PVT exhaust snorkle. Fit the hose on the stock coupling from the PVT with a hose clamp. Then route your hose up in front of the motor (keep it away from heat sources) and then up inside your pod or up as high as you want to go. Use tie wraps to hold it in place along the way. Exhaust problem solved. Now, follow the same idea with the PVT intake. On my bikes, the intake is on the right side of the bike near the shifter. I had to make an adapter for this side as it does not have a hose coupling like the exhaust side does. Once you have the intake and exhaust re routed, then you solve your problem of water entering the PVT and you can hit the holes as fast as you want. I have done this to every Polaris I have ever owned and about 20 other friends polaris bikes as well. It has yet to fail and it very easy to do. (about an hour of work for lots of headache free riding hours.)
Hint: when routing the hoses up under the hood or in the pod, make sure to put an upside down U at the end of the hose so that if water does somehow splash in, it roles back out the end of the hose and not down the hose into the PVT. You can route as high as you like to avoid the water. I went all the way up above the handlebars with the airbox, and PVT.
Hope this helps!

I would check the condition of the gasket between the clutch covers. I have never had this problem with my Scrambler, so something is not sealing good for you somewhere and I don't suspect it is the intake. Make sure there are no holes or anything in the lower intake below the coolant overflow reservoir either.

Ditchbuster, I don't understand how "your buddies would be waiting for you" all the time. The whole point of atving is having fun. Who cares if they have to wait. Would you think less of someone who didn't ride as fast as you? Yes you could snorkel the exhaust and intake for the clutch if you really wanted to. Still going into water fast is dangerous. Even you have to admit that. I guess my perception of fun is different than yours. I would be the guy going slow through the water and you would have to wait for me. But it wouldn't bother me. I'd still be having just as much fun. Don't look down on the brand just because you can't go through water real fast. Polaris' are still a great machine.

Ok Expert140..... It seems like every website has a guy like you. Do you know me or how I ride? I didn't think so. So before you make comments like you know me think about what you're saying. The place I ride here in Illinois is totally different then what you're use to riding in the Northwoods. I ride on private land with permission. This land is an old tree nursery with basically one large loop around it. After heavy rain we have a lot of standing water. I have been around this loop probably 1,000 times, so to say the least I know it pretty good. These water holes are only 1 foot deep and probably 20 feet long at the most. Dangerous??? I would say so if you don't know how to ride. Just like its dangerous to drive a car if you have no experience. I'm 37 years old and I get real tired of guys who have never meet me but are able to tell me how to LIVE!
Thanks to the guys who actually had something helpful to say

Ditchbuster, I totally agree. I'm 26 and have been ridiing for long time. I don't ride slow, I don't crawl over rocks or tip toe trough the holes or cross creeks slowly and safely. That's the whole thing I enjoy most about riding.... hitting everything hard and fast. I have flipped, rolled, drowned and abused every bike I have ever owned. I ride hard. I don't tell other people to ride as hard as I do, and I'll be damned if I am gonna let anyone tell me what is best for me and my machine.
Expert140, the guy didn't ask "hey, can some pansy tell me how to ride more gently so my pants don't get wet?" He asked how the hell can he still drive as fast as he wants into water and not get his PVT wet. You pushed your "slow down" campaign and I gave him the answer to his question.
Expert140, if you can't answer the man's question without preaching, then don't respond.
Oh, and by the way... EXPERT140 - "No matter what clutch exhaust outlet you have, water will find it's way in there somehow. Try going slower (safer), that should make a world of difference.
You are wrong again. When the intake and exhaust are routed above the water line and the openings are turned away from the splash, then NO water enters the PVT.
Sorry for bashing you Expert, but I am sick and tired of people like you telling me how I should ride. If he wants to ride as fast as he wants into water and be dangerous, then who am I to stop him?
Ditchbuster, keep riding hard!
