I have a 98 scram 500. It is very slow. I raced a sportsman 500 and got beat. Then i rode a 2001 scram 500, and it runs so much better. I really notice a big difference off the line. Is the newer scram just faster than the 98? Mine is a high output too.
I even tried the hsp 500 performance kit. It came with the clutch kit, 160 main jet, pipe, baffle, and k&n filter.
What should i try? The plug is black, so it running rich right? But it was like that before the mods too.
Any ideas?

I believe the problem lies with you believing you have an HO... it wasnt available then...(i might be wrong... but i dont remember HO's in 98)... however, with the 140-170 lbs diff between a sp and a scrammy you should be able to kick *** on the sp at least in certain areas... is rider weight an issue?.. change quads and try again. if the SP still kicks ya,... it's time to figger out what's wrong.

Actually '98 was the first year for the H.O. in the scram. The only one that did not get the H.O. was the '97 model which also did not have concentric drive or shaft drive in the front. Polaris realized that the 400 scram was whooping the non H.O. 500 scram that is when they put the H.O. motor in '98
