Dad and I did a little comparison testing on a beach with our machines this past weekend. Kinda interesting - what we learned. He was on a stock '01 SP500 with only a large rack on the rear (probably 30lbs) and I was on a stock '03 SP700. We compared several different drag race scenarios as listed below.
1. From a standstill in 2 wheel drive in soft sand, the 500 would out run the 700 by a couple of (for lack of a better term) car lengths.
2. From a standstill in 4 wheel drive in soft sand, the two were neck and neck.
3. From a rolling start in either 2 or 4 wheel drive, in soft sand, both were about the same.
4. From a rolling start in either 2 or 4 wheel drive, on hard sand, the 700 would walk away.
In a nutshell, it appears that the extra weight of the 700 (esp. in the soft stuff) definitely took it's toll. The 500 definitely had an advantage of launching out of the hole but the 700 seem to have top end qualities and better advantages on the harder surfaces. Not that I'm dissapointed by the 700's performance but I might have expected more out of an extra ~200ccs. Both machines have been bullet proof so far. For what this information is worth, there it is...

I raced a sp500, and a sp700, with my scrambler. Scrambler won, and we were in soft sand. Anyway the 500 and 700 were pretty much neck and neck. I think the 700,s true power is not in speed and acceleration. I think it's in the pulling power, and the extra wieght would help if you were pulling a load. I've ridden both of them, and the 700 sure seems to have a lot more power.

The clutch setup for the 700 is tuned towards utility work, or hauling & pulling heavy loads, NOT acceleration. In fact, stock, the 600 will run right with the 700 with the same weight, and the smaller engine, because the clutch is tuned more middle-of-the-road.
Hitch a 1000# trailer to each, and you will see what I mean.
Now, put a clutch kit on the 700, setup for acceleration, and you will run right with the Prarie 650 from a standstill, all the way up.
