The scrambler is great on tech trails. Its not too wide that it decomes a problem. The 2wd/4wd is a lifesaver. The auto is wonderful on those trails. The EX's clutch would seem like a nucence on those trails. And you can find Scramblers for under $4000. I got mine for $3750

I think you would like a 400EX and a used one would fit right in your price range.

I would get the scrambler 500 too. I've always wanted to get one but it'll be a while since I just got the z400 a few months ago. I will tell you to get a suzuki z400 before a 400ex because you get a little more power stock and REVERSE. As for the scrambler you still get a pretty speedy quad and you can bust through mudd like you wouldn't beleive because of all the speed you can hit it with. They also climb hills like nobodies business, I just don't like the weight (over 550lbs I think). I still think the scrambler will satisfy you more especially coming from a polaris already.
