Default Scrammy starter does not engage

Hi, the starter on my 1995 scrambler 400 4x4 does not engage anymore. I have a fresh battery and everything else is working fine but it just spins. I am hoping that I do not have to replace the whole starter as from what I am told it is a hell of a job. Could it be something else?
Thanks
Dave

Default Scrammy starter does not engage

Hey Dave. It sounds like the bendix might be froze up on the starter...not engaging it to the flywheel. Pretty common on the 250's and 400's. I think you might be able to remove the bendix with out removing the starter...not positive though. Remove the pull starter cover from the side of the engine...you'll see the flywheel and the bendix near the bottom. (on the front of the starter).

The flywheel will have to be removed before the bendix will come out, so it may be easier to remove the starter.
