My machine is a 2001 Polaris Sportsman 400 with about 300 miles on it, I have owned it since new and have had zero problems with it so far. I was wondering what kind of luck other owners have been having with their 400 engines. Do they hold up very well? And are there any common problems that I should look out for? I plan on owning this machine indefinately, and I like to maintain things the best that I can. What kind of mileage can I expect to get out of it before it begins to wear out?

Proper maintenance is the key to making anything mechanical last. Use synthetic oil and a quality filter (not Fram) and it should last indefinately. Even a properly cared for 2-stroke will last longer than you think. I just sold my 93 250 Trailboss and that motor was never touched and still ran like new.
