Why Is It Not Fast?
#1
My friend had some motor work done to his 2000 Scrambler 4x4 500. He had it ported, an AAEN cam, and an AAEN hi comp piston installed, as well as a DG Big O Xcellerator full exhaust. He has a K&N with lid on, his stock carb is rejetted, AAEN clutch kit, and 22" Holeshot XCR's in good shape. He also took off 22 pounds worth of plastic and metal. He runs it on premium.
Now, this thing just doesn't run like it should, at least thats what I think. Heres why...
My friend's mom just got a 2003 Scrambler 500 4x4 High Output. IT IS ALL STOCK. Every time the two would race, the H.O. would beat the modded 2000 by about 2-3 bikes! Not to mention getting walked all over by a couple stock 400EX's. This is on dirt, 300 feet.
What the h3ll is done to those H.O.'s? Is is anything, or is this one just a fluke?
Any and all comments are appreciated.

Who did the work? What makes you think it is 'not running right'? What is the compression reading at right now? Is it running too rich, lean? Is the clutch done right? Correct springs, setup, torsions? We need a lot more inforation.

A local shop did the porting, and it is only a mild port. My shop in town installed everything. I don't know what the compression checks at now, but the piston is 10.75:1 or 11:1. I is jetted spot on. I assume the clutch is done right, but the guy that owns it is not to smart with 4 wheelers and I don't know enough about cvt's to tell, but it seems to running perfect. I never said it wasn't running right, it just doesn't seem to be running like it should. Is it not right that a correctly set up built engine should outrun a stock one of the same kind?

You need to check and see what all he has in the clutch. To start he is probably running the 58gram weights in the primary. He needs to try some 53gram weights,it will make a big difference. You may want to get a hold of an HPD violet secondary. You can have all the power in the world ,but if you can't get it to the ground it's useless.

sound like the pipe/clutch combo isn't dialed-in together,i'll run the stock polaris exhaust over a dg pipe any days.

if a local shop did the porting the clutch will need to be changed to run in the correct rpm range or the power you get from porting is wasted. you'll have to just try clutches til you find it, specialty shops like aaen, hpd, rcr, and so usually sell the correct springs and weights for thier porting, but since it was done at a local shop you will have to find the correct clutching yourself

I agree with most others about he clutch needing to be dialed in.But as far as the DG being junk heck its a 4stroke and you dont need to clutch to the pipe as you do with a 2stroke.4strokes pull all the way through the RPMs not at a certan range. What it sounds like is you are shifting out too soon which is caused by the primary not being set up right.Try a Polaris white or Green spring and if that dont help try a set of lighter weights.
