Default does sp 400 fit my needs?

Hi all,

I am considering a used '02 sp 400. It only has 141 miles and comes with a warranty into 2007. After reading a few posts in here, some seem to think the 400 is underpowered. I'm not concerned about acceleration or top speed. I want more utility....plowing, towing, pulling logs, etc. so low-end power is what I'm interested in. Does this ATV fit my needs? My budget is around $4500 so a newer sp 500 is probably out of range.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

check this out. The sp400 may not be a speed demon, but it is definately one tough quad. Check around. You may be able to find a sp500 for under $4500

The 400, in low range, will spin all 4 wheels on pavement, although slowly. If you are not interested in speed/acceleration, it will probably be fine for you. Just don't ride a HO. Even if you say you are not interested in speed, the 'rush' when you peg the throttle can be addicting!
Also, the load you pull at 10 MPH with the 400, the 500 probably will pull 15+ MPH. It won't really pull a bigger load, but it pulls the same load easier.

Thanks for the feedback. The reason this one appeals to me is because of the extended warranty. Not too many have that. I'm not too mechanically inclined so it would be nice to have that for another 4 yrs. That leads me to another question...are these warranties fairly comprehensive like a 'bumper to bumper' warranty? Obviously wear-and-tear items wouldn't be covered, but is Polaris pretty good about covering everything else?

Thanks again.

keefer ......go for it the 425 motor is a solid powerplant with all the power you will need to work with. Trailmaster......my 425 will go past Prarries that are hung up and winch them through. And yes they will spin tires on pavment.

the 425cc engine is deffinately no speed demon BUT it is a tried and true bullet proof power plant!!
I just got back from my uncles farm in central OR. and he has 2 magnum 425's one with 5600 miles and the other with a little less, niether have ever had engine work on them!!! I can say I got my 04SP up to 60mph but I was drafting behind a horse trailer goin from one field to the other. out on the open road it was about 52 max and a long time gettin there.

The engine produces enough torque to break the wheels loose on pavement. I didn't mean that it had enough acceleration to do that, sorry for any confusion. What I meant was that when hitched to an immovable object, the engine had the power to bust loose all 4 wheels.
See above post for my opinions on speed.
