Default Scrambler 400 clutch help

Hope someone can help me with this.
my wife has a scram 400 4x4. We bought it used and the previous owner installed a high stall clutch because he used it at the dunes a lot. We use it at the dunes a lot also but here is the problem. It can barely get going but when it gets the rpm's up it screams. Well now that clutch is worn out and I have to replace it. Never rode it with and OEM clutch but thinking about putting it in. This quad is useless for trail riding with hills unless your wide open which my wife never is. In the sand she will open it up but if you stop in any kind of deep sand, it will hardly move(as you gas it the wheels won't turn and the engine boggs down).

What will it be like if I put OEM clutch in it? Will it still have the same top end? What is the beneift of the high stall clutch? or is this high stall clutch not working right and it should still start off ok. One more point of interest-when you go into reverse it won't move unless you use the override.

Please help and explain this to me as I need to repaur it soon and go riding.

Thanks
Mike&Christina

Default Scrambler 400 clutch help

Hello, more than likely the previous owner changed the primary spring to a higher engagement one. I am just assuming the bike is a stock bike. If the stock pipe is on it, then you could go back with the stock setup and be fine, it would have the white Polaris primary spring with s-55 weights. It would engage quickly and work like it should. If the bike has an aftermarket pipe on it, then here's where the fun starts. You would need to know what pipe it is (who makes it). Only then could you get a spring that would better suite your needs. If you dont match the clutching to an aftermarket pipe, it could run worse than a stock bike. Also almost any change in spring from the stock one will result in having to hold the limiter button to move in reverse. Another thing to look at would be the condition of the secondary clutch buttons and make sure the spring is in the 2-2 or 1-1 setting. Hope this helps,Bubba

If the clutch must be replaced anyway, get the stocker, and start from there. The only difference between stock, and the high-stall clutch is the spring, and maybe the weights.
I would get the complete clutch, and see how it works. If the engine bogs, or doesn't seem to run in the powerband, go from there. Bubba is right on the money about matching the clutch settings to any engine mods, but since your clutch is worn out, and you don't like the settings it has anyway, the stocker is a good place to start. If you find you need to swap springs, they are only like $15 or so.

If you are going to buy a new clutch for it I would take a serious look at the new comet hpq 103. Its supposed to be better than the OEM and only cost a little bit more. If you know what pipe you have ( wether its stock or after market and who made it) and what if any mods have been done to it and you give Rick Ritter a call at RCR he can tell you what spring you will need for it. The last time I talked with him ( about a week ago) I asked about the new Comet clutch and he said that he was getting some more info on it and he also told me if I was going to get a new stock clutch to give him a call. Give him a call and talk with him, he is a great source of info and a great help, he won't try and sell you something you don't need. Good luck.
